Drawing from personal experience, I know there are lots of ways to help make your household move easier and more smooth. Read on to help get your life, and your possessions organized for a peaceful and exciting move.

Make a list.

Write everything down! You’ll thank yourself later. Before you pack even one box, create a simple record keeping system. Create a computer-printed list of numbers with a space to write the contents, or have a spiral-bound notebook for the job. You’ll place a number on EVERY box you pack and list the contents on your list. Don’t put the list down unless it’s in a place you’ll call Packing Central. This is where you’ll find your labels, marking pens, box tape, and other supplies. When describing the box contents, be specific — “A-D files” is better than “files”, and “Tulip dishes” rather than “misc. kitchen.”

Have plenty of supplies.

Don’t make me say this twice– you’ll need LOTS of boxes–probably more boxes than you think, and having enough boxes will make your life easier! (If you buy your boxes from a moving company, you can always return unused boxes for a refund. If you got them free from the grocery, just toss any leftovers.) Have about 10 boxes set aside to use for last minute items on moving day, such as bedding, clothing, and cleaning supplies.

You’ll need strong plastic packing tape to close up the boxes securely. Use unprinted newsprint (newspaper can stain your items) or packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap and cushion household goods. Again, you’ll need more supplies than you think, so get extra, in order for your packing to go smoothly. Return any unused supplies after the truck is packed.

Utilize wardrobe boxes.

These tall boxes are perfect for bulky, lightweight items such as comforters, pillows, and blankets, as well as clothes that need to remain hanging. Call your mover to ask the width of the wardrobe boxes they’ll be bringing, then measure the clothes in your closets (including coat closets) to see how many wardrobe boxes you’ll need. You can also use them for closet storage boxes, shoe boxes, and other bulky items such as fabric bolts, large baskets, or gift wrap tubes.

Don’t make the boxes too heavy to lift. One mover told the story of someone who put a bowling ball in a wardrobe box! When the box was lifted off the truck, the bottom gave way, sending the bowling ball on a wild ride down the ramp, across the street to the gutter, then down a hill where it finally came to rest in a roadside ditch. (Is that a strike or a spare?)

Strategize wardrobe box use.

Moving companies will be happy to deliver boxes ahead of your moving day. If you’re doing the move yourself, get things organized as early as possible. A few days before your move, fill some sturdy handled shopping bags with bulky closet items such as shoes, sweaters, belts, and jeans. On moving day, fill the bottom of the wardrobe boxes with some of the shopping bags, then add your hanging clothing. Pack hanging items tightly so things won’t move around and fall off of hangers. Finally, cover the shoulders of your clothes (a dry cleaning bag works well), then add a few purses or sweaters on top. You’ll have fewer boxes, and closet items remain together. Also, the shopping bags will make it easier to retrieve your belongings from the bottom of a tall wardrobe box.

Color coordinate.

Designate a color for each room in the new home, such as yellow for kitchen, orange for dining room, etc. Apply colored stickers on the box near the box number. In your new home, put a matching sticker on the door to each room. The movers will know where to put everything when they arrive at the destination. It’s also helpful to post a big sign on the wall in the room where you want boxes stacked, (”Boxes here please”) to keep them out of furniture and traffic areas.

After earning her Medical Doctorate from Temple University School of Medicine in 1984, Dr. Foote met internship and primary residency requirements in surgery at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. She completed her residency in urology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. Even people who do not come from a heritage of longevity can live to old age if they look after themselves and avoid the risk factors that cause poor physical and mental health, thus accelerating the aging process. Following a healthy diet, regular exercise, drinking in moderation, cutting out smoking, and following safe practices can all help to increase potential life span.

As we age, there are certain processes which cannot be avoided. This is particularly so of cell aging. As our body cells age, we are more likely to contract certain conditions because of the decline in strength and resistance to infection. Our bodies also begin to show signs of ‘wear and tear’. The skin loses its elasticity, thus resulting in the wrinkling we associate with old age.

As our body’s cells wear out, they are replaced by a process of cell division. The only cells which don’t replicate are those in the brain which cease to divide after birth.

It has been a philosophy that if you look after your body, particularly your body cells, then anti-aging should be smooth sailing. How? By nutrition - a balanced diet with associated exercise. The right and optimum balance of antioxidants and minerals daily is a great start.

Anti-aging health shouldn’t be something you decide is a good idea when it’s too late. Your body cells are constantly bombarded by those little attack armies called free radicals and if left unchecked, without the daily optimum replenishment of antioxidants and minerals, over time, they will kick-start a degeneration process that more often than not, can’t be reversed.

The good news is that this process usually occurs over an extended period of time. Antioxidants, like little body commandos, will seek out these free radicals and neutralize them. But, you need to keep them coming on a daily basis.

Healthy body cells means you are one step ahead of the anti-aging health game. So set the pace, and make sure you don’t slip back and become another aging statistic.

After 100 posts, we’re still honored to salute people like Dr. Danielle Wilson, developer of Kissable toothpaste. She has already gone above and beyond, in serving her community and leaving a legacy.

Dr. Danielle Wilson’s achievements have been great, yet she has remained humble. Born in Queens, New York, Dr. Wilson knew she wanted to become a dentist at the age of six years old. She says, “I was always interested in science and helping other people. I persevered and it became a reality for me.”

Dr. Wilson received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. She also graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School. In addition, she spent 10 months studying in New Zealand at the University of Waikato, as a Fulbright Scholar. On becoming a Fulbright Scholar, she reflects, “It was very competitive. We had to have a certain grade point average, write an essay, choose a country we’d like to visit and then compete with all the other students who were interested in that particular country.”

“I wrote my essay on a topic pertaining to science education,” she recalls. Her scholastic achievements and award-winning essay won her an opportunity to study at the University of Waikato. Dr. Wilson’s educational excellence didn’t stop there; she also received a NASA Fellowship to attend Morgan State University.

As a volunteer, Dr. Wilson lived for three weeks on an Indian Reservation making dentures for Native Americans. She has also provided dental screenings via a Colgate van for children who otherwise would not receive proper dental care. This diverse experience has helped her connect with her patients even more.

Dr. Wilson decided to move to Atlanta because she had heard it was the land of opportunity - where people could come and be successful. As far as she is concerned, all that she heard has definitely been true.

After being unhappy with the brand of toothpaste she was providing in her practice, Dr. Wilson decided to develop her own. Her popular, flavorful and successful new line of toothpaste is called, Kissable. It contains healthy ingredients, which promote a bright smile, fresh breath and healthy gums.

On other mornings, when we reach the top of the mountain, all we can see is thick fog. The fog is so dense; it’s difficult to see anything beyond a few yards from where we’re standing.

When it’s foggy, it’s almost hard to believe that the Atlanta skyline even exists. But our subconscious knows it does and tells us it does. That’s what faith is all about - having a firm belief in something for which there is no proof.

Accordingly, just because you can’t see the great potential, which lies within you, doesn’t mean it’s not there. It was there the day you were born. Your job is to “unleash” it. Just because you may be feeling hopeless, doesn’t mean hope doesn’t exist. It’s always there, waiting for you to grasp it and move forward.

It’s so easy for many to throw their hands up and literally accept defeat without a fight. And others seem to hang their head, giving up after losing only one battle. Nevertheless, you must believe that your possibilities are still endless.

I love the quote by Conrad Hilton, which says, “Successful men and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.”

Success could be right around the corner. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. You’ve got to embrace that…and keep moving forward!

A few months ago, he was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to grant us an interview, and he shared some startling statistics.

Dr. Walker also reminded us of simple choices we can make, which can save our lives as well as the lives of others.

I felt it was important to repost his message, especially since we have another holiday right around the corner. Please share it with a friend.

His mother worked odd hours, which usually left him on his own most of the time, so Jay learned early on to do for self. After I discovered he was an only child, I became his unofficial big brother and he treated me as such.

One day, I saw him as he was going to the neighborhood convenience store. I spotted him walking at a quick pace in my direction. I was on my way to the tennis court to practice my game.

Calling out to him as I always did, I shouted, “How’s it going, Jay?”

He yelled back, “Fine, but I can’t talk right now because I have to go to the store for my mom.”

After we had made it within a few feet of each other, I noticed something was in his hair that made it look all matted together.

I inquired, “Jay, what’s that in your hair?”

His response was, “Nothing…I can’t talk right now or I’ll get in trouble. I have to go to the store for my mom.”

He started to cry.

I called out, “Jay what’s wrong?”

Once again, his reply was the same.

“Nothing.”

As I got even closer to him, I saw blood running down his left ear from a gash he had in the top of his head. I was afraid for little Jay because he was losing a lot of blood. I told him that he should come with me immediately to the apartment complex management office. I figured that we could at least get some bandages there.

Jay emphatically said, “No…I can’t because I’ll get in trouble.”

I knew I had to do something. After pleading with him, to no avail, to come with me, I decided to run to the management office as fast as my legs could carry me so they could call an ambulance, police or do something to help.

When I arrived at the management office, I told Carol, the apartment manager, what I had witnessed. She quickly called an ambulance and the police department was notified. We got into her car and sped up the hill to the nearby convenience store. When we walked into the store, we saw little Jay at the counter, purchasing a pack of cigarettes for his mother.

It was one of the most heartbreaking sights I had ever seen in my short life. This little innocent human being standing there with matted hair, a gash in the top of this head and blood running down his ear, still determined to obey his abusive mother at any cost.

I will never forget his words that day. He bravely said to us, “You know, when my mom hit me on top of my head with that belt buckle, I didn’t even cry.”

At that point, all of the adults who were looking on, did.

A few weeks later, on the evening before it was time to go to court to testify on little Jay’s behalf, I walked around my apartment complex, going door to door. I wanted to find out whether or not any of the other kids — who knew little Jay had been beaten by his mother, were going to court to speak up for him. They all replied, “No, we can’t go, our parents won’t let us.”

I later found out that many of the residents, both children and adults, already knew little Jay was being abused long before this incident.

I remember being extremely disappointed with my friends and their parents. I was taught that you should do whatever you could to help someone in need. But on that fateful day, as I looked around the courtroom, I was the only kid who showed up.

Unfortunately, at age fourteen, I learned that Albert Einstein was right. “The world is not dangerous because of those who do harm, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” After the trial, Jay and his mother moved away the next day.

Thirty-one years later, the memory of little Jay is still etched in my mind and I often talk about him in my presentations. People sometimes ask me what happened to him. Well, I never saw him again. Nevertheless, I hope his life took a turn for the better because he deserved no less than the best.

Dr. Evans completed his training in adult psychiatry at New York University Medical Center in New York; his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and his forensic psychiatry fellowship at Emory University. Dr. Evans is triple board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Evans is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Morehouse School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences where he serves as the Course Director for the Forensic Psychiatry curriculum and Course Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry curriculum.

He is a consulting psychiatrist and treating clinician for the National Football League (NFL) and Atlanta Braves, a staff psychiatrist at Peachford Hospital, and consults to multiple Atlanta area hospitals. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.

Being the daughter of a military officer, Dr. Hailey spent most of her childhood traveling across the nation and living in different parts of the country. It was during these travels that she discovered no matter where she went nor whom she met, the people with “Beautiful Smiles” always made lasting impressions.

So, after moving to Atlanta in the early eighties and finishing her high school education in Decatur, Georgia, Dr. Hailey enrolled in Georgia State University, as a biology major. “The fact of the matter is, in 1949 when the Federation for the Blind was founded, 99 percent of the blind people in America were unemployed. So, the founders of this organization decided to encourage their members to view blindness as a personality trait rather than a disability.

In other words, the leaders of this organization encouraged their people to rethink what was possible for them. They changed the facts! Because of this paradigm shift, blind people today are succeeding in areas once believed impossible. They now work in almost every field imaginable…teachers, attorneys, mayors, artists, Olympic athletes, professors, entertainers, TV talk show hosts, professional speakers, etc., and the list goes on and on of professions which the blind now occupy.

Are you old enough to remember Allen Funt from Candid Camera? Well, he used to always say that most people don’t question things. They just accept things as they are and invariably go with the flow.

The Candid Camera crew was in Delaware filming a few segments for their television show. Dr. Denmark was the 3rd female graduate of the Medical College of Georgia in 1928. She was one of the first female pediatricians in Atlanta and practiced medicine for more than 70 years. It has been estimated that Dr. Denmark treated more than 250,000 patients during her distinguished career. She is credited with being the co-developer of the Whooping Cough vaccine, which saved countless lives of children in the early part of the 20th Century.

When I first met Dr. Denmark in 2002, she was 104 years old, and had just closed her medical practice the previous year, at 103. At that time, she was the oldest practicing physician in America.

Over the years, I’ve learned many valuable life lessons by staying in contact with this legendary Atlanta doctor. Some of them prompted me to do further investigation, and I incorporate many of them into my daily life. Coming from Dr. Denmark, they were even more powerful because she has seen many years come and go. Here are a few lessons she shared with me…

• Don’t abuse your body with junk food
• Love what you do
• Drinking cow’s milk is dangerous
• Do your best to help others
• Too much sugar is not a good thing
• A sense of humor is very important for longevity
• As a doctor, it’s important to find the root cause of a problem
• Never bring a child into the world unless you’re willing to take care of them
• Children are not getting parental guidance and it’s wrecking this nation
• Kids in daycare are deprived of attention and catch too many illnesses
• We need to think about everything we eat and drink
• Let’s do is easier than do
• Anything you have to do is work and anything you love to do is play
• During the Great Depression, 11,000 of America’s 25,000 banks closed
• Never raise your hand or your voice to a child
• Parenting has gone out of style
• Children and adults should eat fruit instead of drinking fruit juices
• Drink only water
• The greatest change she’s seen in her lifetime has been the neglect of little children

This is what works for me: My wife and I no longer buy milk. She makes it from scratch using dates and almonds. I don’t buy fruit juices because once the juice has been pasteurized, the vitamin and mineral content have both been greatly reduced. I’ve cut back on my junk food consumption tremendously, and I no longer look at day care facilities the same.

Parents, you are your child’s first teacher. You know what can create a successful or disastrous day for your child. Be confident that you can offer valuable information to the school staff about meeting your child’s needs. In order to sufficiently do so, you must know your child’s (IEP) Individual Education Plan. Be sure to understand the details, specifically in the areas of: goals and objectives, placement, and supportive aids (classroom modifications and testing accommodations).

Be Proactive

The person who initiates communication can set the tone for the relationship. Waiting until you receive that phone call or letter from school before making a formal introduction creates a reaction versus a proactive purposeful intent. Educators are there to support your child’s educational experiences. See them as a friend or colleague. Remember that as with any other relationship, the more you are supportive, the better the relationship works.

Be Present

In order to truly know what is working or not working at your child’s school or in the class, you must be present. Schools and teachers appreciate volunteers. Begin with your child’s class. You may start by reviewing your child’s homework, send in an extra set of supplies for the class, and make preliminary phone calls to set up a field trip, or gather materials for centers or projects. Those tasks may seem simple but really can support a teacher especially if he/she does not have a class assistant.

Some teachers are apprehensive about class volunteers, when they are secretly there as class spies. Being present is about building a rapport and trust with the teacher, so be mindful that your actions and words should be ones that uplift and support the relationship you desire for the sake of your child.

Be Persistent

Do not be dismayed by a teacher who refuses your support or presence. Begin by making small gestures of a weekly phone call or email. Sometimes teachers are overwhelmed and thinking about how you may help her possibly just gives her one more thing to do. Instead of waiting for her to give you a task, be observant. Notice things that may be needed in the class when you drop off or pick up your child. Look at project details or newsletters to identify ways you could contribute with those activities. When I was growing up, I heard of kindergarten, but never day care. My mother always left my sister, brother and me with relatives. Now day care, a place where children subconsciously know that they are not “feeling the love of a REAL parent ” is the order of the day. Not only are these children deprived of attention, they often catch all sorts of illnesses and develop bad habits.

A law firm in North Georgia has earned millions of dollars dealing with issues such as burns, severed fingers, falls, broken bones and even deaths, all in the care of, and sometimes at the hands of a day care provider. Recently, in my neighborhood, a business was closed because someone’s little angel’s arm was broken. The business has reopened under new management.

Yes, I understand there are many single parents who MUST work…but whatever happened to the extended family? I’m all about self-improvement and following your dreams, but must kids suffer or have their lives put at risk daily by strangers who are more interested in GROWING their business–NOT raising your kids?

Trust me, neglected children are more likely to develop into people you hope you never meet, rather than People You Need to Know. It’s time for us to rethink day care and how we rear our children in this country.

Is your company conveying the right image? My Spanish professor in college used to tell us, “It’s not who finishes first, it’s who gets the “A”, so before you rush to get that brochure printed, make sure you let someone else look over it for correct spelling, proper use of grammar, photo clarity, and overall design. Branding really boils down to how a product makes a customer feel. The late Walt Disney wrote, “People spend money when and where they feel good.”

Branding your product effectively can also help your company stand out from the crowd. John Williams, the branding and image expert wrote that we must brand, package, and market ourselves so that we are desirable. Today, effective branding isn’t an option, it’s an absolute necessity. Your business will be viewed in a certain manner either by choice or default. We have the power to choose how we’re going to be represented in the marketplace.

After we understand what branding can mean for our organization, we must embrace Personal Branding for our own benefit. Personal Branding is about understanding who you are, what you stand for, what you want to be known for, and what you believe. It is not enough for people to know what you do, you want people to know you for what you do differently. Being another player in your category will not make you known. You want people to perceive you as the best in your category…the only solution to their problem.

What are a few words that sum up your Personal Brand? For me, when I ask myself this question, the words that come to mind are, dependable, loyal, attention to detail, creative, and trustworthy.

Now, let’s briefly explore Branding’s NEW mantra, Emotional Branding. When a customer feels good about a product or service, this is where Emotional Branding comes in and this is the type of branding that gives organizations the competitive edge. Apple Computer users are not typical. They are fiercely loyal, emotionally attached to the Apple brand, and will never think of purchasing a PC.

The same is true for soda drinkers. Most people either drink Pepsi or Coca-Cola, not both. Emotional Branding leads to a heartfelt connection with its customers that cannot be broken by a competing product with a lower price or sometimes even better quality. I read that people are drawn to certain brands because companies are selling potential consumers’ own ideas back to them, they are selling the most powerful ideas that we have in our culture.

Ideas such as transcendence and community–even democracy itself, these are all brand meanings now. Coca Cola has been embracing the benefits of emotional branding for more than three decades. Back in the 1970’s their most successful advertising campaign was “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” which promoted a world community where everyone has a voice. This was Coca-Cola’s most successful ad campaign.

After all is said and done, branding comes down to one word, making your product desirable.

Someone once said, a vacation is what you take when you cannot take what you have been taking any longer. When you live a busy life, it is easy to find yourself out of fuel and feeling a little run-down. Anyway, you do not always need a long vacation to renew your mind and give your brain some fresh air. Sometimes, you just need a day off.

Business owners sometimes fool themselves into believing that their business cannot afford to lose them for even one day. Well, it can. Trust me, long after you’re gone, the world will continue to spin on its axis.
